World Athletics 400m Standard Track Dimensions
Under the World Athletics Track and Field Facilities Manual, the 400-meter Standard Track consists of two parallel straightaways and two circular turns with an equal radius:
- World Athletics Track Facilities Compliance: Engineered strictly to Chapter 2 of the official Track and Field Facilities Manual.
- Kerb Radius Compensation: Automatically adjusts for the 0.30m raised kerb vs 0.20m flush painted line measurement rules.
- Diagonal Excess (DE) Math: Calculates exact breakline tangent extensions for 800m and 4x400m relay transition zones.
- Interactive 2D Track Blueprint: Live visual schematic mapping concentric lanes, staggers, and breakline transitions, paired with official hurdle and relay zone placement charts.
- Dual Measurement Units: Outputs all survey and striping coordinates in both metric (meters) and imperial (feet/inches).
- 1-Click Survey Data Export: Formatted clipboard export for track striping crews and electronic total stations.

Why Is the Lane 2 Stagger Smaller Than Subsequent Lanes?
Many track builders and coaches notice that the stagger from Lane 1 to Lane 2 (7.037 m) is smaller than the stagger between Lane 2 and Lane 3 (7.666 m).
This is caused by the 0.30 m vs. 0.20 m kerb rule. Because a raised kerb is a physical obstacle, athletes running in Lane 1 naturally track 30 cm outward. In Lanes 2 through 8, the inner boundary is simply a flat 5 cm painted line, allowing athletes to track closer (20 cm). This 10 cm radius difference reduces the delta radius for Lane 2:
Δr (Lane 2) = (36.50 + 1.22 + 0.20) - (36.50 + 0.30) = 1.12 m Stagger = 2π × 1.12 m = 7.037 m (versus 2π × 1.22 = 7.666 m for outer lanes) Frequently Asked Questions About Track Markings
What is the formula to calculate track lane staggers?
For a full lap (400m / 2 bends), the stagger formula is: Stagger = 2π × [w × (n - 1) - kerb adjustment], where w is lane width (typically 1.22m) and n is the lane number. On tracks with a raised kerb, a 0.10m adjustment is applied because Lane 1 is measured 0.30m out while outer lanes are measured 0.20m out.
Why is Lane 1 measured 30cm from the kerb but other lanes 20cm?
Because a raised kerb is a physical barrier that an athlete could trip over, World Athletics specifies that runners naturally stay 30cm away. Lanes 2 through 8 are bordered only by a 5cm flat painted line, allowing runners to run closer (20cm) to the line.
What are the dimensions of a World Athletics 400m Standard Track?
A regulation 400m Standard Track has two circular bends with a radius of 36.500m to the kerb line, joined by two straights measuring exactly 84.390m each. Total length along the running line equals exactly 400.001m.
How long is a 4x100m relay exchange zone?
Under modern World Athletics rules (Rule 24.3), the 4x100m relay uses a unified 30-meter exchange zone, eliminating the older 10m acceleration zone plus 20m zone distinction. The zone starts 20m before the scratch line and extends 10m after it.
