800m Stagger & Diagonal Excess (DE) Break Line Guide
Under World Athletics Technical Rule 17.5 (formerly Rule 163.5) and NCAA Rule 5, the 800-meter race is run in individual assigned lanes until athletes reach the green curved break line at the exit of the first turn.
When an athlete in Lane 8 reaches the break line and cuts diagonally across to Lane 1, their diagonal path across the back straightaway is longer than running straight along the inside rail. This extra hypotenuse distance is known as Diagonal Excess (DE) and is added to their 1-turn stagger.

Pythagorean Diagonal Excess Derivation (World Athletics TR 17.5)
Consider an athlete in Lane n who breaks toward the inside rail upon crossing the break line. If the back straight has length S = 84.39m, and the lateral distance between Lane n's running line and Lane 1's running line is ΔR_n:
Diagonal Path = √(S² + ΔR_n²) Diagonal Excess (DE_n) = √(S² + ΔR_n²) − S Step-by-Step Calculation for Lane 8:
1. On a raised-kerb track, ΔR_8 = R_run,8 − R_run,1 = 45.24m − 36.80m = 8.44m.
2. Diagonal path across the straight:
Path = √(84.39² + 8.44²) = √(7121.67 + 71.23) = √7192.90 = 84.811 m DE_8 = 84.811m − 84.390m = 0.421 m (1′ 4½″) Total Stagger_8 = (π × 8.44m) + 0.421m = 26.515m + 0.421m = 26.936 m (88′ 4″) How to Survey & Scribe the Curved Green Break Line
The break line is an arc drawn across the track at the beginning of the back straight. Under World Athletics striping specifications:
- Line Color & Width: A continuous 50mm wide green line painted across all outer lanes (Lanes 2 through 8).
- Scribing Center: The break line is an arc scribed with a steel wire from the center point of Turn 1 (Pin C2), with a radius equal to:
R_break = √(R_kerb² + S²) = √(36.50² + 84.39²) = √(1332.25 + 7121.67) = 91.945 m (301′ 8″) - Corner Cones / Flags: During competition, small green cones, prisms, or 50mm × 50mm markers are placed on the track surface where the break line intersects the lane lines to aid visual identification.
