200m Sprint 1-Turn Bend Stagger Guide
Under World Athletics Technical Rule 17.3 and NCAA Rule 5, the 200-meter sprint starts in the second turn (Bend 2) and finishes on the common finish line of the home straightaway. Athletes negotiate exactly one 180° curve in individual assigned lanes.

Mathematical Formula for 1-Turn Staggers
Because the 200m sprint encompasses exactly one semicircular bend (π radians or 180°), the mathematical stagger is precisely half of the full 400m two-turn stagger:
Stagger_200m = π × (R_run,n − R_run,1) = π × ΔR 1. The Lane 2 Raised Kerb Adjustment:
For a track with a regulation 50mm raised border kerb, World Athletics mandates measuring Lane 1 at 0.30m outward from the kerb (R_run,1 = 36.50 + 0.30 = 36.80m). Lane 2 is bordered only by a 50mm flat painted line, so runners track 0.20m outward from the line (R_run,2 = 36.50 + 1.22 + 0.20 = 37.92m).
ΔR_2 = 37.92m − 36.80m = 1.12m Stagger_2 = π × 1.12m = 3.5186m ≈ 3.519 m (11′ 7″) 2. Outer Lanes (Lanes 3 through 8):
For all subsequent lanes, the running line delta is exactly equal to the lane width (w = 1.22m). The differential between each consecutive outer lane is:
Step = π × 1.22m = 3.8327m ≈ 3.833 m (12′ 7″) Curve Biomechanics & Lane Draw Rules (WA TR 20.4)
In sprint physics, negotiating a bend requires centripetal acceleration (a = v² / r). A sprinter traveling at 10 m/s in Lane 1 (r = 36.80m) experiences significantly higher lateral torque than an athlete in Lane 8 (r = 45.24m):
| Lane | Effective Radius | Centripetal Force at 10 m/s | Biomechanical Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lane 1 | 36.80 m | 100% (Baseline) | Tightest turn; highest lateral torque on ankle and knee joints. |
| Lane 4 | 40.36 m | 91.2% (-8.8%) | Ideal balance of curve transition and sightline to competitors. |
| Lane 8 | 45.24 m | 81.3% (-18.7%) | Gentlest curve; lowest velocity loss from lateral deceleration. |
For this reason, World Athletics TR 20.4 (Lane Draws for Sprints) categorizes lanes for semi-finals and finals:
- Preferred Lanes (Seeds 1–4): Drawn in Lanes 4, 5, 6, and 7 where curve radius is wider and sightlines are optimal.
- Secondary Lanes (Seeds 5–6): Drawn in Lanes 3 and 8.
- Lowest Preference (Seeds 7–8): Drawn in Lanes 1 and 2 due to tight turning torque.
